ニーダーザクセン州南部の
1797年から1798年に博物学者のホフマンゼック(Johann Centurius Hoffmannsegg)とポルトガルの調査を行い、植物学の分野を主な研究分野とした。
1800年にドイツ自然科学アカデミー・レオポルディーナの会員に選ばれ、1808年に光学関係の論文でサンクトペテルブルク・アカデミーから賞を受賞した。学問的な評価が高まり、1811年にブレスラウ大学(ヴロツワフ大学)の化学と植物学の教授に任じられ、ブレスラウ大学の学長にも選ばれた。
